Training courses and sharing good practices

Which training courses would you like to have access to as a teacher? Why? Which is, in your opinion, the best way to share good practice amongst teaching professionals? Why?

From my point of view, it is very important that teachers complete our formation with training courses during all our professional life because in a society like ours, which progresses really quickly, it is essential that teachers recycle us constantly.
Usually, during the career you learn some general concepts about education and about how to teach. But then, when you are working, you need to put them in practice and sometimes you feel that you do not know how to manage some situations.

From my experience, it has been very interesting attending courses when I’ve started working, because when I had to think about how to design an activity or how to apply a tip, I had been thinking in my real students and classes. Nevertheless, it is true that you have less time to dedicate to formation; but if you organize yourself, you can find time for all.

Fortunately, nowadays we have many opportunities to improve and recycle our educational practices. For instance, we can search on the internet about our interests and follow some blogs or youtube channels. We also can attend a course organized by a university or other educational organizations such as CEFIRE or we can apply for a scholarship in Erasmus+ programmes around the world. We are going to explain the advantages of each of them.

On the one hand, it should be noted that there are many free and interesting learning web pages on the Internet. I find them good because here you can find resources, activities and ideas of other teachers who work in the same level or subject as you and who probably have the same challenges and problems than you. Besides, it is a good way to share useful information and experiences because you can keep in touch with professionals from all the world.

On the other hand, you can share good practices amongst teaching professionals in the communities of practice. They are promoted by our autonomous community with the CEFIRE and their work groups. With this type of training, a group of teachers that wants to develop a work project and elaborate materials is able to do it in an independent way.

Other option available is the Erasmus+ Programme. Its purpose is implementing actions and improving the mobility of individuals in order to promote innovation and exchange of good practices.

In conclusion, if you want to improve your teaching style, you have a lot of opportunities to do it through courses and different work groups related to your subject and interests. This is why there are no excuses to be up to date to the new educational methodologies.

The most important thing you would teach and how you would assess it

If you were not limited by the demands of the national/regional curriculum, what would you say is the most important thing you would teach your students about your subject (in a CLIL context)? How would you assess their learning?

The first think we should consider is the subject that we are going to teach because depending on the type of CLIL instruction, we will focus on the language, on the content or on both at the same time.

In the variant A (CLIL in subject lessons), it is given more relevance to the contents of the curriculum of the subject. English is just used as a vehicular language. However, in the variant B (CLIL in foreign language lessons), the most important thing is the language and contents are the means through students develop their language skills. Last, we have variant C (balanced CLIL) where both items are considered at the same level.

As Massler, Stotz & Queisser (2014) explain, the way as the teacher should assess in each case is completely different.

If I used variant A, I would base the assessment on the subject curriculum using different tools such as tests, writing development explanations or oral questions. I would use the foreign language just as a way of communication the knowledges.

In the case that I teach variant B, I would base the learning aims on the language, specially doing activities to practise the four skills: speaking, writing, listening and reading. The main objective will be acquire the communicative competence in the foreign language.

Supposing that I was using variant C, I would focus on the curriculum and on the language. The idea is to mix both in a fully integrated teaching and learning process. For doing that, projects can be very useful in where we can assess all the aspects considered using rubrics.

The next point we must take into account is the kind of assessment we are going to implement. According to Assessment in CLIL, there are three different types of assessment depending on when we evaluate the students.

The diagnostic assessment is made at the beginning when you start teaching in order to check the level or the abilities of the pupils. Then, we have the formative assessment, which is realised during the learning process for being sure that students are going on and understanding new knowledges. Finally, we have the summative assessment that is accomplished at the end to get a final information about the goals achieved.

In conclusion, using CLIL offers a wide range of possibilities of teaching adapted to the needs of the students and can have great results in their learning.

Advantages and disadvantages of using the ELP

Taking into account my personal teaching context, what would be the advantages and disadvantages of using the ELP with my groups?

First of answering that question, we need to reflect on what a European Language Portfolio (ELP) is. The Council of Europe introduced the European Language Portfolio as “a means of helping language learners to keep track of their language learning as it happens and record their language learning achievements and their experience of using other languages and encountering other cultures”.

According to the European Centre for Modern Languages, using this resource has many advantages for the learners, the teachers and the policy-makers.

A learner who uses the ELP is all the time conscious of his own learning process in an autonomous way. He can organize his knowledges and self evaluates his own learning. That is why learning becomes more efficient and effective and, at the same time, very motivating.

The ELP also can be very interesting for teachers because they can benefit from the two functions of it (Little, 2002). In its reporting function, it presents additional information of the student language learning experience. This helps reporting language learning achievement in an internationally transparent manner. In its pedagogical function the ELP is engaging learners to share responsibility for the learning process, to think critically when they plan, monitor and evaluate their learning and to develop appropriate target language use.

At last, the ELP is a good tool also for policy-makers because it promotes linguistic and cultural diversity in classrooms, schools and societies. And therefore, the ELP can be an appropriate key in promoting democratic citizenship.


Nevertheless, the use of ELP in classroom can also have some disadvantages. For instance, in Primary school pupils maybe have difficulties to understand the descriptors to self-assess their learning process because it is too abstract to them. Another disadvantage could be that students cannot be honest with their own evaluation because is easier to get a good mark in their learning abilities and skills. If we look through teachers’ perspective, we should understand that implementing the ELP could demand an extra effort in order to learn how to apply it in a correct way in their classes.


In conclusion, the ELP has more advantages than disadvantages. That is why it is an effective tool to develop linguistic and cultural competences of students, at the same time that it is an useful instrument for children and teachers in order to support the evaluation of their learning process.

Presentation

Hello friends!

I’m back again! It is a long time since I don't update this blog. But now I'm going to use it again for the subject Assesment and continuous professional development that I'm studying right now. For those who don't know me yet, first of all I'm going to introduce myself. I'm Isabel Gómez de Membrillera Desantes and I’m 23 years old. I work in a catholic private school in Burjassot called San Miguel Arcángel. I’ve just started this year working as the special education teacher for the Primary School and the English teacher for the preschool students (3, 4 and 5 years old). It is my first job experience and I’m really enjoying it and learning a lot!

I studied Teaching at the University of Valencia from 2011 to 2016 and now I’m studying Training for teaching in English at the UCV. At the moment, I have a B2 level in English language by the Official school of languages of Valencia, but I would like to get a C1 certificate soon. I can also speak Valencian and Spanish. The last one is my mother tongue. Besides, I studied French when I was at school and I got a A2 certificate by the Official school of languages of Valencia. But it is a long time since I do not use it, so I do not feel that I can have a fluently conversation.

I’m really interested in education and I like learning about new methodologies that help children to think and learn more effectively. I think that teachers have a very important task because we are contributing to build people of the future. So that is why we must try always to do the best and improve our teaching process. In order to do that, here I'll write some posts with reflections about the english teaching and assessment process.

Setmana del 21 al 27 de Maig

            Esta ha sigut l’última setmana del curs. El dilluns varen continuar les exposicions de les unitats didàctiques. Els va tocar el torn a les següents: 

          

      -    Animals

És una unitat per a xiquets de 1r de Primària que tracta sobre els animals. Jo considere que este és un tema molt apropiat per a aquesta edat ja que és en este moment quan comencen a interessar-se per ells i pot ser una font de motivació prou important.  

 

-         Reciclatge

Aquesta unitat també partia d’un tòpic que està 

molt d’actualitat i és el reciclatge dels residus. Al igual 

que la unitat didàctica de les energies renovables, 

també pretén fomentar actituds de respecte cap al 

medi que ens envolta.

Després hem passat a fer una reflexió sobre el treball realitzat en la qual el mestre ens ha comentat els aspectes positius i negatius per tal de fer una crítica constructiva de les nostres unitats i exposicions. Pel que fa a les fortaleses, el més positiu ha sigut el procés pel qual hem hagut de desenvolupar la nostra imaginació i organitzar una unitat integrada. Tenint en compte les debilitats, sovint hem caigut en elaborar activitats que, tot i que no utilitzen llibre de text, seguixen la mateixa estructura. Açò ha sigut en part perquè tenim arrelada (com a conseqüència del nostre pas pel sistema educatiu) una forma tradicional d’entendre l’aprenentatge. Un altre aspecte ha sigut el fet de que la majoria hem dissenyat una gran activitat per al final, però dur-la a terme al principi també poc ser interessant ja que podem partir d’una activitat motivadora de la qual traure els fils.

El dimecres va ser l’últim dia. En primer lloc, unes companyes han exposat la unitat didàctica que faltava, la qual tractava sobre l’aigua. I després, hem fet una dinàmica molt divertida que ha servit per a valorar el curs i despedir-nos. Ha consistit en el següent. En primer lloc, havíem d’escriure en un full per una banda els aspectes positius de la assignatura i per altra els negatius. Després, els hem tirat a terra els papers i hem llegit per damunt el que havien ficat els companys i companyes. Quan se’ns ha indicat, hem arreplegat un per a completar-ho amb les nostres opinions al respecte. Posteriorment, hem tornat a deixar-los al terra i a rellegir-los. Per últim, havíem d’agafar un i, amb el que hi estava comentat i el que hi volia afegir cadascú, elaborar una poesia o una cançó. La veritat és que hi ha eixit alguns molt xulos i graciosos! 

Personalment, pense que ha sigut una activitat molt divertida que ens fet passar una estona distesa. A més a més, crec que amb aquest tipus de dinàmiques es pot aconseguir que, coses tan rutinàries com avaluar una assignatura i a un professor, es convertixen en realment motivadores.

Finalment, hem acabat concloent amb una reflexió final per part del professor. I, tal com tots sabíem amb molta pena, ha arribat el moment de despedir-nos. 

Setmana del 14 al 20 de Maig

M’agradaria començar l’entrada d’aquesta setmana amb una notícia d’actualitat que m’ha paregut molt interessant i que tracta sobre el tema que unes companyes ha exposat durant la classe del dilluns: La formació del professorat.

"Nous Plans de Formació per al professorat"

"Els Plans de Formació del Professorat i Investigació Educativa tenen com a objectiu l'actualització i perfeccionament de les competències professionals del professorat i la millora de l'educació dels alumnes.

Al llarg de les quatre convocatòries que ja s'han celebrat, les modalitats de formació que s'han realitzat a Segòvia han de veure en orde de demanda amb: la implantació en l'aula de les Tecnologies de la Informació i la Comunicació (TIC) , programes de biblioteca, de convivència en l'aula i el bilingüisme també és molt demandat pels educadors de la província. Generalment, els plans estan organitzats en projectes de formació en el centre, en cursos i grups de treball, i en menor grau es realitzen seminaris i experiències de qualitat."

            Aquesta notícia evidència la necessitat que tots els docents tenen d’estar renovant-se contínuament ja que l’escola, com a encarregada de donar resposta a les  demandes de la societat, ha de comptar amb un equip docent capacitat per a adaptar el seu ensenyament a les necessitats escaients. A més a més, la formació contínua possibilita l’oportunitat de compartir amb altres professors les inquietuds i dificultats derivades de la seua tasca docent, així com afavorir espais de reflexió compartida per a enriquir la pròpia pràctica. Al meu parer, considere que la formació és una exigència que actualment està present en quasi totes les professions  però especialment en la de mestre ja que com es diu en la imatge: "Qui s'atrevisca a ensenyar mai ha de deixar d'aprendre."

            Després de l’explicació de les companyes, hem fet una activitat pràctica en la qual hem llegit uns textos que mostraven les sensacions de mestres prou diferents alguns dels quals havien optat per actualitzar-se mentre que altres havien romàs indiferents als canvis metodològics fins que havien acabat per cremar-se. Per últim, Carles ens ha comentat alguns aspectes que considerava importants en relació al tema tractat i hem comentat un poquet el que pensàvem. M’ha paregut interessant conéixer la història dels MRP i dels diferents mecanismes de formació permanent que han hagut a Espanya (els CEP o els CEFIRE) així com la situació actual.

            La segona sessió de la setmana ha estat dedicada a exposar tres unitats didàctiques:

-          I tu, d’on ets?

Aquesta és la que el meu grup i jo hem elaborat. El tòpic sobre el qual s’enllacen tots els continguts és la multiculturalitat i part de la evidència de que és una realitat que, cada vegada més, trobem present a les nostres aules. Per la qual cosa, el nostre objectiu és fomentar actituds de respecte i comprensió cap als nouvinguts.

        

      -           Energies renovables

Esta unitat pretén donar a conéixer les diferents opcions d’obtindre energia fent especial èmfasi en aquelles que eviten la contaminació. Este és un tema també molt interessant per tal de conscienciar als xiquets de la necessitat de cuidar el nostre planeta.

 

-          Vida saludable

Aquesta unitat part de la necessitat de transmetre a l’alumnat una sèrie d’hàbits d’alimentació, higiene i exercici que, des d’edats primerenques, cobren molta importància per a afavorir un estil de vida saludable.

En general, les tres han intentat tractar els continguts de manera globalitzada i elaborar els propis materials per a cada activitat. Tot i això, és cert que ha sigut molt més complicat del que pensàvem en un principi ja que ens hem hagut de calfar el cap per a buscar formes originals i innovadores d’ensenyar els continguts (que a més havien de correspondre’s amb el nivell de l’alumnat i abordar els coneixements establerts pel currículum oficial) fugint de la metodologia tradicional i de l’esquema: explicació-activitats-correcció.

Setmana del 7 al 13 de Maig

Hem començat la sessió d’aquesta setmana explicant el que entenem per avaluar. Després d’escriure breument el que cadascú considerava i posar-ho en comú, ens hem adonat que el nostre pas pel sistema educatiu havia fet que vincularem avaluar a fer un examen i obtindre uns resultats. No obstant això, hui hem aprés que es pot avaluar d’altres maneres. 

En primer lloc, és important saber que avaluar és analitzar una realitat per a valorar els aspectes positius o negatius. Aplicat a l’educació seria mesurar l’adquisició d’un aprenentatge. Açò és pot fer de diverses maneres, alguns exemples són:

- Mitjançant l’observació directa del treball de cada alumne i l’anotació dels progressos en rúbriques o diaris d’aula

- Amb treballs o exposicions orals

- Valorant l’actitud i la participació

- Fent fitxes o exàmens (sempre que aquestos siguen una ferramenta més en l’avaluació i no determinants per a establir una nota). 

El tema dels exàmens és un aspecte prou complicat ja que el sistema educatiu en general està muntat per a aprendre uns coneixements que després seran aplicats a l’examen sense importar si realment l’alumnat ha aprés alguna cosa. Per aquest motiu i per tal de canviar esta realitat, jo pense que trencar amb esta rutina i convertir les aules en espais d’aprenentatge reial per a la vida està en les nostres mans.  

La classe del dimecres ha estat enfocada a tractar la pedagogia de Freinet. Aquest francés va proposar un model d’escola popular on l’aprenentatge dels xiquets partia dels seus interessos. Pense que és un tema molt interessant ja que aquest moviment recull els aspectes que hem estat tractant al llarg del curs, tals com la possibilitat de treballar sense llibres de text o de construir una escola que lluita per canviar la societat que li rodeja. 

L’esquema que s’ha fet servir per a tractar el tema ha sigut: una visualització d’un documental que presenta els principis d’aquesta pedagogia i el paper que es duu a terme des dels Moviments de Renovació Pedagògica, el posterior comentari en xicotets grups i la posada en comú a nivell de classe per a compartir les opinions i reflexions de cadascú.

Tot i que no he pogut anar a aquesta classe, sí que vaig veure el començament del vídeo que ficaren en la sessió anterior. A més a més, conec la proposta freinetiana degut a que vaig anar a la xarrada Una escola sense llibre de text on l’expositora ens va estar parlant de les diverses tècniques (com l’assemblea, l’estudi del medi, els dossiers o la correspondència, les quals no comente perquè les vaig explicar en una entrada anterior) que es duien a terme a l’aula per a fer possible esta metodologia. Baix el meu punt de vista, considere que aquesta és una alternativa molt interessant ja que planteja un model d’escola diferent al que està establit. A més dels nombrosos avantatges que presenta, suposa una tornada als orígens pels que van nàixer les escoles: no com a facilitadores d’un certificat acadèmic i burocràtic, sinó com a vertaders espais de vida on els xiquets i xiquetes creixen com a persones.
